People often ask me what castles and historic houses have connections with their family name.
Here are just a few of the answers I have given so far.
Some of this information comes from Martin Coventry's book The Castles of Scotland ( ISBN 1-899874-26-7 ).

The Abernethy family has connections with
Mayen House (6 miles NE of Huntly)
Rothiemay
Saltoun Hall
Hawthornden Castle

The Arbuthnott family has connections with
Arbuthnott House in the village of Arbuthnott between Stonehaven and Montrose. Gardens open to the public all year. House is open on special occasions (contact the owners, phone +44 1561 361 226).
Castle of Fiddes was once held by the Arbuthnotts but sold in the late 17th century. Now a farmhouse restored in the 1960s. 4 miles SW of Stonehaven.
Findrowie Castle demolished in the 19th century. 3 miles from Brechin.
Keith Inch Tower near Peterhead. After 1715 it was bought by the Arbuthnotts who built a new house. Little or nothing remains of the tower now.

Davidson
The ruins of 16th century Greenan Castle at Greenan in Ayrshire (2.5 miles SW of Ayr railway station) stand on the site of an earlier castle which was owned by the Davidsons. As far as I know little or nothing of this original building remains.
Tulloch Castle, 1 mile north of Dingwall (north of Inverness in the eastern Highlands). It belonged to the Bains until 1760 when it passed to the Davidsons who held it until the 20th century. It now operates as a hotel.

Grierson family castle list
Barjarg Tower (3.5 miles south of Thornhill at Barjarg in Dumfriesshire)
Lagg Tower (7 miles SE of Moniaive in Dumfriesshire)
Rockhall (6 miles east of Dumfries). Much altered tower house. Sir Robert Grierson lived here during the time of the Covenanters. It is said that his pet monkey haunts the building blowing a whistle. Used to be a hotel but has now been sold and is in private ownership.

Lochore Castle, 3 miles north of Cowdenbeath in Lochore Country Park, Fife, was occupied by the Malcolms of Balbedie in the mid 17th century.
Duntrune Castle, 6.5 miles north west of Lochgilphead in Argyll came to the Malcolms of Poltalloch in 1792.
